A Danish-owned, U.S.-operated container vessel called Maersk Alabama was siezed by Somali pirates. The vessel is part of the U.S. Maritime Security Program.

According to the Danish shipping company, the ship was flying under a US flag and had a crew of 20 Americans on board. The ship was captured 500 kilometres off the coast.

The Danish company said that the Maersk Alabama vessel was part of the East Africa service network and was on route for the Kenyan port of Mombasa when the pirates attacked.
