Earth Day Facts and Activities

Acccording to CNN, more than one billion people are expected to mark Earth Day Wednesday. That is a lot of people. This means that about one-sixth of the world’s population would participate on Earth day.

Earth day was coined by United States senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. Since then it has spread around the world and is now marked in about 175 countries. This means about 4 countries join each year to mark the day.

Many people are encouraged to participate. They can show their support by wearing a green shirt.

To show your full support for earth day, you can start doing environment friendly stuff, such as

1. Cutting back on your energy consumption -: Turn off and unplug unused electical devices.

2. Use energy saving bulbs.

3. When you are shopping go with a shopping bag and don’t take a plastic bag from the store.

4. Recycle your recyclables.

If you want your children to participate in the Earth’s day, there is a book for elementary child to learn more about it. The book is called “S is for Save the Planet: A How-to-be-Green Alphabet”. According to the author, Brad Herzog “It’s a book that tells kids about simple actions they can take to protect the planet”.
